Agustín Tapia: Bio, Titles and Playing Style
Darío Agustín Tapia Nievas was born on July 24, 1999 in San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, in northern Argentina, a province with no real padel tradition to speak of before him. He's right-handed and plays the revés, or backhand, side of the court alongside Arturo Coello, and he's currently ranked world number one.
Starting with his grandfather
Tapia picked up a racket at nine years old, and his first regular partner wasn't another kid, it was his grandfather, who was over 50 at the time. His parents were the ones who gave him his early grounding in the game. By 13 he was already playing in the top adult division at his club and won the end-of-year masters there. The talent kept compounding: by 15 he was turning heads across the province, and that's when the nickname that stuck with him for life first appeared, "El Mozart de Catamarca."
Leaving Catamarca, chasing Rosario
At 15, Tapia left his family behind and moved to Rosario to train seriously, a city he picked partly because it's the hometown of Lionel Messi, his idol growing up. Two years later, at 17, he'd worked his way to the top of the Argentine national ranking and moved again, this time to Barcelona, to join the professional circuit full time. His first tour partnerships were with Marcello Jardim and then Juan Martín Díaz, but the pairing that made people take notice was with Fernando Belasteguín: in September 2019, just weeks after turning 20, Tapia won his first professional title alongside Bela at the Madrid Master, beating the tour's number one pair in the final.
Titles and records
Tapia has won 39 Premier Padel titles in his career, a number that alone puts him among the winningest players of this era, and more than 55 professional titles in total once his World Padel Tour years are included, split across partnerships with Belasteguín, Pablo Lima, Sanyo Gutiérrez, and now Arturo Coello. He and Coello first reached world number one together in 2023 and have held the top ranking for three consecutive years since, sealing it for good with a Doha Major win in 2024 before dominating the 2024 and 2025 seasons with 14 and 13 Premier Padel titles respectively. Tapia has also represented Argentina at the World Championship, finishing runner-up to Spain in both 2022 and 2024.
Playing style
The nickname isn't just a catchy label, it points at something real about how Tapia plays. On the revés side, he handles drop shots, blocks, changes of pace and subtle touches with a sensitivity few players on tour can match, and he layers that finesse on top of genuine explosiveness, switching between raw power and delicate solutions within the same point. His defense is elite level too: mobility, elasticity and reaction speed that let him resolve balls from deep court that most players wouldn't even reach. That combination on the backhand side is what frees Coello to play his more physical game on the drive, the two styles complementing each other almost perfectly.
